DPS trooper hospitalized after semi-trailer crashes into patrol unit

ABBOTT, Texas  A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was hospitalized Sunday night after a big-rig crashed into their patrol unit.

The crash occurred just after 11:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near mile marker 361, just north of Abbott, according to DPS Sergeant Ryan W. Howard.

Howard said the semi-trailer drove onto the shoulder and crashed into the trooper’s patrol unit, which was stopped off the roadway.

The trooper, who suffered head injuries, was airlifted but was speaking to first responders while on their way to Baylor Scott and
White Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco.

The trooper’s condition was not disclosed.

The investigation into the crash continues and charges are possible, Howard said.

The driver of the semi-truck was not hurt.
