Trucker arrested for allegedly shooting out minivan windows with a slingshot on I-74

A Wisconsin-based truck driver was arrested over the weekend in Champaign County, Illinois, after allegedly using a slingshot and ball bearings to shoot out the windows of passing vehicles.

Fifty-three year old Kevin Lee Casey was arrested on Friday night and is expected to be charged today with criminal damage to property, aggravated battery in a public place, and aggravated battery to a child.

Casey was arrested following an investigation by Illinois State Police (ISP) into numerous drivers reporting shattered windows as they drove along I-74 since late March, according to the News-Gazette.

From State’s Attorney Julia Rietz:

Since the initial reports on March 30, Zone 5 Investigations received multiple reports of incidents of damage to vehicles throughout multiple counties to include Vermilion, Champaign, Piatt and DeWitt. By comparing the reported incidents, a pattern was formed.

“A majority of the incidents occurred on Wednesdays and Fridays. Victims reported their vehicles were damaged while traveling westbound on I-74 for a majority of the Wednesday incidents. For the incidents occurring on Fridays, the majority were traveling eastbound when their vehicle was damaged. The majority were driving minivans.”

During one of the incidents, a three year old child was injured by broken glass.

Investigators used witness testimony and video to zero in on a truck with a license plate number registered to Casey.

Police were prepared to serve Casey with an arrest warrant when they caught him in the act of using a slingshot to shoot out the driver’s side window of a minivan that was eastbound on I-74 around 7 p.m. on Friday.

When questioned after his arrest, Casey admitted to using a slingshot to shoot out vehicle windows. Police also found a slingshot and metal ball bearings inside Casey’s truck.

Casey’s bond was set at $2 million after the judge learned of his previous domestic battery and sexual assault of a child charges.
